Excel Option

The NCDOR has a tool available to assist with filing W-2s electronically utilizing Microsoft Excel.

Important:

You will need to have Microsoft Excel installed to use the tool. If you have Microsoft Excel 2003 or earlier installed, you will not be able to use the excel option. Not sure which version you have?
If you have Microsoft Excel for Mac, you will not be able to use this tool.

About the W-2 Text File Generator

The tool assists businesses and employers with creating a W-2 text file that can be uploaded in the Department’s eNC3 application to meet the electronic filing requirement. This option is great for employers who are unable to create a text file for upload but have too many W-2s to use the manual entry option

Troubleshooting

Note: If you encounter an error when using the W-2 Text File Generator, it may be due to your system settings. We recommend that you enter at least one W-2 record and test that the .txt file can be generated from the Export tab. Read our troubleshooting guide for help with certain kinds of errors.

If you are unable to use the Text File Generator, there are other filing options available to help you meet the electronic filing requirement.
