Join Our College Internship Program

College students can "learn and earn" in NCDOR's College Internship Program, which offers paid, part-time positions to students in the fields of Accounting/Auditing, Business, Economics, Communications, Graphic Arts, Criminal Investigations, and Process Improvement. Participants will get real work experience and learn about future career opportunities both at the NCDOR and in other state government agencies. Positions are available throughout the state periodically during fall, winter, spring, and summer sessions as needed by the agency.

Accepted Majors: Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field (Administrative Science, Business Law, Business Management, Business Operations, Finance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Tax, Tax Law and Trust & Wealth Management)

Skills: strong analytical and quantitative skills; ability to communicate ideas and findings clearly and effectively; work well in teams and independently. Applicants must have a at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Duties: assist audit staff with mailings, scanning, etc.; data entry and work within databases; perform data analysis; analyze records for accuracy; review financial records received during audits; shadow auditors (including attendance at taxpayer meetings, live and virtual); work assigned special projects as needed.

Duties: creating content for intranet, website and social media (interviewing employees, writing and editing, video editing, pitching social media content), research experience and critical thinking skills; attention to detail; can meet deadlines; can work and generate ideas independently. Must be able to provide own internet service.

Criminal Investigations Internship (based in Raleigh)

May 19 – July 25, 2025

Criminal Investigations Division

Accepted Majors: Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or Criminal Justice

Skills: demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software applications to include Word and Excel; effective verbal and written communications; organizational and time management; effective research and analytical skills.

Duties: assist Special Agents in their case work to further their investigations, to include case research, calculating tax due, bank analysis, scanning case documents, and data entry; actively participate in training related to tax systems, databases, professional communication, etc.; attend informational meetings, tours, and presentations as requested; shadow and participate in Criminal Investigations activities; develop and give a presentation regarding internship.

Office of the General Counsel

Candidates must be enrolled in law school and be rising second or third year law students.

Skills: strong research and writing skills, interest in working in an in-house legal environment. Note: completion of one year of law school is required.

Duties: legal research and writing projects, stakeholder meetings, policy-related research projects, tracking legislation and relevant litigation, reporting research/assignments to the General Counsel and staff, and tracking executive branch action in other states.

Duties: 

  • Review and analyze current business processes and procedures within the Business Registrations Unit to assist in modernizing some manual processes. 
  • Document workflows and identify areas of improvement. 

Duties will involve the intern in the unit's day-to-day operations to develop a clear understanding of each of the processes. The intern will interact with frontline employees, the Business Registrations management team (manager & supervisor) and provide updates to the Assistant Director. The intern will work collaboratively with the Business Registrations unit and units that support and/or receive information from the Business Registration Unit. The intern will propose solutions and track the progress of the proposed projects that are implemented.

Tax Analytics Intern, one hybrid position based in Raleigh

May 19 - July 25, 2025

Tax Analytics Division

Preferred Majors: Technical Writing, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field

Skills: reading legal decisions and understanding the findings; distinguishing key words from these cases/decisions so that we can flag for keyword searches; basic computer skills to navigate files, and basic data entry to enter information into a database; effective communication skills to work with our staff to learn more about what our finished product should look like.

Duties: assist in creating, updating, and maintaining technical documentation that supports our database application development and maintenance processes. Work closely with developers, business leads, and other stakeholders to ensure that documentation is clear, accurate, and accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences.

The intern will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced application development environment, develop technical writing skills and knowledge of SQL and Microsoft Access, work with experienced professionals, and contribute to meaningful projects.

Preferred Major: Criminal Justice

Skills: candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and have the ability to work well with others. Must be able to exercise discretion (since USUB tax involves potential criminal activity). Must be honest and possess a high degree of integrity. 

Duties: assisting with USUB tax cases to include administering tax assessments, communicating with taxpayers, collecting USUB and other applicable taxes, and closing cases.
